I have a couple of openers that I will usually start with and then just go wherever I feel like from there. This one points out my name, which is pronounced “Bent”.
This really isn’t a “bit” so much as it is a transition that I wish to try and force myself to remember how to get into the new material smoothly.
A lot of the time I start to write the set list and then forget and start to write-out an entire joke (this one happens to not be funny) - then I have to remind myself that this is a set list. And… it’s not really a “set list” it’s more of a “wish list”. It’s the material that I want to get to in the show.
A lot of the material that I perform on stage is a boiled-down version of longer form writing stuff. This bit on global warming began as a blog post on my web-site that I have re-posted below. (None of the blog made it into the bit.)
This was a closer that I hadn’t done in this room before and was kind of requested by the club owner, so I wanted to remember to get to it. I think I only used it once out of eight shows. The clip of it is on YouTube and embedded below for your viewing pleasure.
This is another segue reminder.
Again: this isn’t so much a “set list” as a “wish list” but these two bits I didn’t get to in eight shows. This set list stays at the back of the room, maybe if it was on stage I would remember.
